I crafted a printed card deck and boxes for the U.S. Surgeon General to hand out on his Made to Connect Tour to colleges and universities around America to talk with students about loneliness and social isolation. The cards provide small example actions for someone to take as part of the [5 for 5 Challenge](https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/priorities/connection/challenge/index.html), where participants take 5 minutes for 5 days to practice social connection exercises. The printed deck is a counterpart to a digital deck available [here](https://www.hhs.gov/surgeongeneral/priorities/connection/cards/index.html).

I developed printed prototypes of the cards that would be given out at the events on a home printer before they were made to test out sizing for print. The final cards are given out without a box, so since there would only be 20 boxes ever made, I created a dieline and lasercut the packaging that Vivek would carry around to the events.

The digital cards were first sketched as only ever digital, and I created the illustrations in 3D using Spline. The style mimicked the look of our style for the Social connection and Loneliness advisory work. I also worked on the design for the digital deck counterpart, below is a recording of an early prototype, the card movement interactions were later removed to aid phone accessibility and make way for a lighter overall touchpoint.

Made to Connect Card Deck

As an experiment during the beginning of the pandemic, I delved deeper into creating interactive tools inside of Figma to forge connections between people, the first of these were games. Our remote teams at IDEO started to use this puzzle generator I created to have fun with their work teams and even outside friends and family.

Happy Motoring Gas Station

Charles River Food Co-Op is a cooperative grocery store that is set to be developed west of Boston in the Watertown, Waltham, Newton area. The co-op stands as a beacon for community support, with local members all pitching in to build it. I'm currently doing my part by designing brand visuals for the team. The Co-op badge combines human elements, natural elements, and the Charles River watershed to symbolize the connection between the community and its food, and the support that co-op hopes to soon provide for that community.

Food Co-op Brand Design

I worked with the founder of Goldielox Mahjong to bring her vision to life: a set of 43 tiles to capture elements of Jewish culture and weave them into a mahjong set. We went through many rounds of revisions with multiple manufacturers to settle on the final designs. Along the way I created multiple lasercut samples of different tile sizes and layouts, inking them by hand to ensure readability was high at the small tile size.

### Design of the tileset

Below is a capture of the tileset, sized to the traditional Chinese mahjong sizing standard. We had originally made larger tiles, but moved to a smaller size to ensure players could use familial racks if they desired.

### The brand

The Goldielox brand features a set of vintage inspired badges in a 1950s style hand-lettered face. The brand was made to be flexible and expand or shrink in complexity to fill different spaces on packaging, walls, paper ephemera, or anything else the company might need.

### Packaging and Inserts

Boxes were designed in three colorways, we approached the packaging design to be versatile for use in shipping or for in-store purchasing. Inside the boxes there would also sit some inserts featuring a welcome guide with storytelling around the tiles and suits, along with a handy mahjong hand guide to set the player up for an advantage.

### Art Direction and Interaction Design Direction for Website

For the website's art direction, we chose to create metaphors for you social connection health as being a garden, something that needs constant and habitual tending to get the most diversity and value from. I created art direction and worked with another interaction designer on the team to execute designs for the work. The original sketches included web 3D scenes that would create magic moments while exploring the site, however, they proved a little too large to meet accessibility standards, and were swapped for static visuals instead.

I developed a visual library for one of the office's first mascots, CeCe, an asterisk with covered in fur. CeCe is fully animated and articulated in web 3D and has a composable library of animations and emotions on key press.

I created MOGRT templates in After Effects for running new releases of advisories for the Office, these new animations allow room for custom animation like the ones I timed in the video below. This approach allows for other people on the team to reuse the work and update it without need a high level of craft specialty in AE.

Surgeon General Advisory: The Healing Effects of Social Connection

In an effort to keep making progress in my craft as a craft tooling specialist, I believe that we should be exploring new ways to use common tools by using them in a manner in which they were unintended to be used (In this case, Figma, a common tool for designers of the time). That is to say: common tools are deemed easy to use. If we can use common tools as building blocks to make more complex ones, we might find new methodologies of working or playing without the need for new learning, because the interface is made from something familiar.

These efforts produce tools, templates, and games (many that are an attempt to mimic other functionality not present inside the tool), completely in Figma.

Figma Tools

During my time at the U.S. Office of the Surgeon General, I led an effort for creating a brand and visual language for the office's first-ever podcast series. The series is now out [on Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/show/1RPYNmGmTwSf8WzTfTZ68e?si=ed4ade94f88f402b) for streaming.

### The Animation

During the end of the project and close to the launch of the podcast, I created a series of MOGRTs in After Effects that powered an animated trailer with a voice-over from Vivek. These templates allowed designers and videographers to easily adjust the timing and composition of the flow of the animation at will for easier collaboration between my process and theirs.

### The Brand

I worked through a brand direction inspired by historical elements from Vivek's past experiences as Surgeon General, turning them into collage elements juxtaposed with bright color and explosive-type treatments. The end result evokes new hope for the SG's legacy.

### Podcast Cover Tool

I created a Figma tool for generating podcast covers and a separate template for podcast title cards and key images, these tools and templates help to make it easy for the design team to maintain and create new content for the series. The tool uses variants and component properties to help you compose an entire podcast cover unique to the episode's content by uploading a single image and editing a content field. The images below show only a fraction of the components that power the tool. This is only meant to act as a base for designers to start from but provides a great jumping-off point for new compositions and ideas.

Introduced and played during IDEO CoLab's annual Blueprint event in 2020, the Game of Strife is an ode to the complete trainwreck that was 2020. The Figma hosted board game can be duplicated by anyone in the Figma community to be played with up to 6 players (or more if you just duplicate your play areas to make more room).

### The design system

The system for Orquestra studio follows the VS Code visual language closely and makes modifications only inside of new panels to give users an integrated experience. The initial prototypes were tested by users flowing through the experience in an electron app with an embedded Figma view inside to give the illusion of a real experience that they could give honest feedback on.

Wistia Tiny TV

Anthropogenic's first software product, Scope 6 allows companies to set tactical goals and covenants using tracked sustainability assets.

### The Brand

Another large part of the work was creating a brand system that would power other products within Scope 6's network, the first of which being [Earth API](https://www.hge.earth/) (out now for public use!), which would help to power some of the reporting data that Scope 6 uses for verification of progress towards climate goals. I created a leaf-shaped S inside of a hexagon that could be re-shifted for other letters fairly easily.

Everything about Scope 6 was leading with data. The team is rooted in science and factual accuracy before anything else. To channel this, I used generative and algorithmic solutions for many of the brand's elements, along with bringing in organically rhythmic shapes and patterns to still give the brand some natural roots.

These generative approaches showed up first when creating the photography style for the brand, overlaying custom-shaped half-tone patterns onto shadows in the photos as a way to create new textures on top of any photo.

I also wrote a small reaction-diffusion algorithm to generate noise patterns for the brand, along with others that I put together into a Figma component tiling tool. This way, anyone on the team can quickly create an on-brand organic texture with a varying color palette without any technical knowledge in Figma.

As a final element to bring more fun and grounding natural elements into the brand, I created a set of illustrations of different animals stylized to fit into abstracted financial and scientific data charts. The animals are used inside the app interface in whimsical ways to bring some lightness into the dreary data.

Since everything is about leading with data with Scope 6, a large part of the project was linking together a custom Apache E-Charts theme with Figma component counterparts. These replications give the design team a high-fidelity view of what they can generate in E-Charts so that it will be consistently on-brand and carry through color, type, stroke, and labels every time they make something.
